Today is National Sandwich Day. We don’t know who created Sandwich Day, or when it was first celebrated.
However, we know a lot about the sandwich how it was created and who it was named for. English history says that John Montagu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich created the sandwich. Even though the fourth Earl was a prominent statesman and served as First Lord of the Admiralty and as Secretary of State for the Northern Department, he was a heavy gambler. Montagu often spent many long hours in London’s gambling parlors. In 1762, he created the sandwich, by putting meat between two pieces of bread. This allowed him to remain at the gambling table for long periods of time. Therefore, the sandwich was named after him.
Lord Sandwich is also remembered for sponsoring the voyages of discovery made by Captain James Cook. Captain Cook named the Sandwich Islands in the Earl’s honour, and as the namesake of the sandwich.
Millions of mom’s and school kids are certainly grateful for the sandwich, and we can all agree it deserves this special day of recognition! Build your favorite sandwiches today and enjoy.
