Ginnie and Lottie were pro-Southern. They blatantly spied for the Confederates during the Civil War and got away with it. One day dispatches needed to be carried to Confederate General Edmund Kirby Smith in Kentucky. Lottie volunteered to carry that message, dressed as an old woman, and went by boat to Kentucky. That started her spy career. After that she carried more and more messages.
Her sister Ginnie went to Tennessee after the death their father, Dr. Moon. For a while, she and her mother nursed the wounded soldiers. Then Ginnie started making trips with information and supplies. She quite easily passed through Union lines. She sometimes pretended to meet a beau. In order to survive, they were very resourceful and confident in their dealings.
