In the winter 1861 Laura Ratcliffe and her sister were nursing wounded soldiers. That’s when she met General James Ewell Brown (JEB) Stuart. They quickly became friends. One of his soldier was John Mosby. John Mosby, a confederate raider used the Ratcliffe home as his headquarters. From there he carried out raids on the Federal forces. She provided Stuart and his cavalryman, with information on Union troop activity in Fairfax County. On the Ratcliffe property there was a large rock at the top of Squirrel Hill, where he and Laura met in secret. This is where she concealed messages for him and when Mosby captured a large quantity of Federal money, she held it for him. If you want to find out more, look her up. It’s an interesting read.
